In the world, but not of the world

So it strikes me today as I prepare to leave with Peter to eat dinner at my Grandmas, to often we as Christians we take Gods word way to far in one direction or another.  Recently I have been thinking a lot about Paul's words in the letter of Corinthians, in chapter 9:19-23 when Paul talks about becoming all things to all people so that by all means we might win some for Christ.  Elsewhere he also says we are to be in the world but not of the world.  All to often as christians, we pull away from the world, into or little glass box, away from anything that can hurt us.  We fail to reach the world this way, all we do is become everything negative about religion.  Then there is the other side, the side that tries so hard to enter into the world that we lose the truth of the Bible, that we become the world.

Jesus shows us the perfect model, he hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors, some of the lowest people in his day.  People loved to be around him, but at the same time he boldly spoke the word, spoke the truth of the Bible.  He spoke it so boldly that eventually he was put to death by the legalistic, religious people of his time who did not want to hear what he said.  But everything he did and said, everything Paul said and all the other apostles was meant for a huge purpose, to bring the unsaved to a saving faith in Jesus Christ.

This should be our goal, and to do this, we have to be in the world.  But if we are in the world, and become the world, losing the truth of Gods word, instead of boldly speaking it, then no one will be reached.  If we truly love someone, then we will do whatever we can do bring them to Christ, if we hold our tongue, then we do our part to send them to hell.  So, if you truly care for someone, you will boldly speak Gods words.  If we truly care, we will be in the world, among the non believers, showing Gods love, but at the same time, speaking with clarity and with certainty the gospel, no matter what trials and persecution this will bring us.  That my friends, is what being in the world, but not of the world is all about.

Hot Button Topics

So basically, because I find hot button topics interesting, there will inevitably be some hot button topics on the blog.  Not all of them, but some that are either effecting me personally or that are really effecting culture at the time.

Obviously the first blog post was a hot button topic,  I would appreciate it if everyone would be very careful to keep things conversations civil, and to conversations instead of arguments.  If you are reading something and it makes you angry, take an hour before you reply, think about what you can say in a non argumentative way.  Then post your response respectfully of the other posters who disagree.  I am the first one to fail in this area and thus need to work on it myself, but lets all work on this together and make this place a fun place to come and discuss issues without them breaking into arguments.

What are we worshiping?

So one quick question, then I am off to bed as its up early for work.  All humans were created to worship, you see this when you go to concerts, sporting events and in all other walks of life.  We were made to worship one thing, and one thing alone.  That is Jesus Christ, our one true savior, the only thing we can worship that will not let us down.  All to often we worship other things, set them up in front of Jesus, making them our priority.  They then become our "functional saviors", these functional saviors though, will always let us down.  So the quick question is, what are you worshiping?  What has first priority in your life?  If you are so brave, do answer and give a quip synopses of why you are worshiping what your worshiping, if you do not want to answer, just think about it.  What is your functional savior?  And isn't it time we all put the one true savior on top?

Prop 8- Gay marriage

This was a discussion that took place on my(Tim's) facebook page when I posted "vote yes on eight" as my headline.  Some good stuff here, take a look at what proceeded:

Introduction

So my name is Tim, and the other dude who will be posting on here is named Peter.  We decided to create this blog while watching game two of the '08 world series while participating in a hot and heavy discussion of prop '08 which will soon be posted for all to see.  We want to have a spot where we, and others, can discuss anything without getting in heated arguments.  Throw away the terms bigoted and intolerent.  They do not apply here, all we ask is you keep it civil and while you don't have to agree with everyones opinion, you have to respect their right to their opinion.  Love war and peace all!!!  Let the games begin...
